Astronomy Research Division
Explore the beauty of our universeAbout
The Astronomy Reserach Division consists of three subdivision, namely Galaxy & Cosmology, Stellar Physics and the Solar System Subdivision.
The Galaxy & Cosmology Subdivision develops research on the structure and dynamics of galaxies, the distribution and evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters, active galaxies (quasars), dark matter search, the study of dark energy, theoretical and observational cosmology.
The Stellar Physics Subdivision develops research on theoretical studies which include numerical modeling of the stellar’s structure and their atmosphere, light and spectrum synthesis of various classes of variable stars (nearby binary stars, pulsating binary stars and accretion disks), observational studies that include photometry and spectroscopy of variable star, the calculation of the orbit of visual binary stars and the polarimetry of Herbig Ae stars, as well as the development of data acquisition and processing systems from CCD-based astronomical instrumentation, image and data processing, data storage, and automatic classification of digital spectrums.
The Solar System Subdivision conducts research activities on solar physics (sunspot individual-motion, high-energy particles and the relation of solar activity to the Earth), studies of near-earth asteroids, asteroid dynamics and evolution, the physics of planets in the solar system (Mars and Titan’s atmosphere) and extrasolar planet studies.
General Road Map
In carrying out those research activities, Astronomy Research Division refers to the general road map as follows:
- Study the physics, structure, evolution of objects and phenomena in the Earth-Moon-Sun system, Solar System, stellar systems, the galactic systems and the universe, as well as modernization of research and education facilities in astronomy and astrophysics in Indonesia
- Identify strategic problems and develop solutions through models and tools for wider or global application and the development of collaborative networks
