History

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) has roots that precede the official establishment of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) on March 2, 1959. It was initially founded on October 6, 1947, as the Faculteit van Exacte Wetenschap under the Universiteit van Indonesië, located at Jalan Tamansari No. 64 in Bandung (currently the ITB Rectorate building). The faculty later evolved into the Faculteit van Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschap, and subsequently became the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Natural Sciences (FIPIA) before adopting its current name: Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA).

The Astronomy Study Program is one of the academic departments within FMIPA-ITB, alongside Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and the Master’s Program in Actuarial and Computational Sciences. The program’s existence is deeply connected to the founding of the Bosscha Observatory in 1923—an iconic astronomical facility in Indonesia. The formal establishment of the Astronomy Study Program was marked by the appointment of G.B. van Albada as Professor of Astronomy in 1951.

Today, the program offers a full spectrum of academic degrees—Undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctoral—making it one of the few institutions in Southeast Asia with a comprehensive astronomy education. As a vibrant and rapidly advancing field, astronomy requires nations like Indonesia, with its unique geographical advantages, to cultivate skilled professionals who can contribute to both national and international scientific development. In the modern scientific era, global collaboration and networking are essential. The ITB Astronomy Study Program maintains a broad network of partnerships with institutions and observatories around the world, ensuring active participation in the global astronomical community.
